Psygnosis, later known as SCE Studio Liverpool, was a game development team founded in Liverpool, England. They were the original publishers of the Lemmings series.
Psygnosis published Lemmings and Lemmings 2: The Tribes as an independent company. In 1993, Psygnosis became a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment (later known as Sony Interactive Entertainment), but continued to be responsible for publishing Lemmings titles including The Lemmings Chronicles, 3D Lemmings (the first to be on Sony's own PlayStation console), and Lemmings Paintball.
In addition to publishing earlier titles of the Lemmings series, Psygnosis developed two of them. Specifically, it both developed and published The Adventures of Lomax; and a subsidiary of Psygnosis, Psygnosis Leeds, developed Lemmings Revolution but had video game publisher TalonSoft release the game. Psygnosis was renamed to SCE Studio Liverpool in 1999.
After these releases, SCE Studio Liverpool no longer published Lemmings games itself. As of the 2006 remake, Sony Computer Entertainment published all new Lemmings games under its own label. SCE Studio Liverpool gave video game development company iFone license to develop and publish games using the Lemmings IP, which led to the creation of Love a Lemming and Lemmings Tribes.
SCE Studio Liverpool became defunct as of August 2012. The Lemmings IP, along with all other IPs previously under SCE Studio Liverpool, is now managed directly by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
