A Level Exit (or simply Exit) is the end point of all levels. When a Lemming reaches an Exit, it is considered to be rescued and disappears. The goal in all levels is to get enough Lemmings to an Exit. Levels can have multiple Exits (up to 4), and sometimes Exits are hidden behind terrain.
Appearance and animation[]
Exits come in an assortment of styles, which are based on the level's tileset in most games.
In Lemmings Revolution, the exit takes the form of the Balloon.
In Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure, all Level Exits consist of two tiles: for the bottom tile, it has a solid black block which has text that reads "Exit"; the top tile is the actual exit. All five standard Exit styles consist of a tan material with a hole leading into an interior with a green light shining in it. In levels with multiple Exits, the blocks instead display the number of Lemmings they can allow inside before breaking. In levels with color-separated Exits, each Exit uses one of three styles, using the following icons on their blocks: a hot pink triangle, a sky blue rhombus, and a yellow circle.
Function[]
All Exits remain in the same spot throughout a level. When a Lemming reaches an Exit, it becomes a "Homer" that stays in place as it moves forward into the Exit. The Lemming is no longer present in the level, and is counted once for the "Home" counter; should this number reach the level's requirements, the level can be considered finished, and will unlock the next level if the player finishes the level. In most games, only a particular spot at the Exit's center triggers a Lemming to become saved.
In a 2 player game, both players' Lemmings will go into either player's exit, with the objective being for each player to try to get the most Lemmings to their Exit. The Blizzard level Check Your Hints! has false "Exits" that are essentially decorations.
Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure has some variations of Exits. Locked Exits are first seen in Beach Life, and they are unlocked when a Mystery Block is destroyed. In levels with multiple Mystery Blocks, which one unlocks an Exit is randomized. Later, starting with Hot Chocolate, two Exits can be seen in one level; and starting with Ice Sculpture, three Exits can be found in one level. When multiple Exits are present, each one can only allow a portion of the Lemmings before breaking, so players must direct Lemmings to all Exits. Starting with Sports, Lemmings can be split into groups marked by colored shapes, which can only go into an Exit bearing a matching style.
