A closed Entrance.
A Level Entrance (or simply Entrance) is the start point in every level, from which Lemmings enter the level. The position of an Entrance in each game determines where in the level the Lemmings will start walking.
Appearance and animation[]
Since their introduction in Lemmings, Entrances are usually shaped like trapdoors, with two door flaps opening on opposite ends of a wide square-shaped hole. Players can get a glimpse of the world the Lemmings fall out of, which is usually a clear sky overlooking a meadow with some trees.
In 3D Lemmings, Lemmings Revolution, and Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure, the Entrance is a floating box that contains Lemmings. It resembles other games' trapdoor-styled Entrances in that its hole faces the bottom and opens with two opposing flaps. In Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure, Entrances have black screens embedded in their front, which count down from 3 until the level begins. The screens read "Go!" when they are releasing Lemmings.
The Entrances in Lemmings (PS3) and Lemmings Touch have more unique styles, which are aligned with the level's tileset. In Lemmings (PS3), "mansion" levels have Entrances in the form of black monster heads releasing Lemmings through their pink mouths, and "machine" levels have Entrances with thick metal square frames and a door that retracts. In Lemmings Touch, "Candy" levels have Entrances shaped like gumball machines, while "Space" levels have Entrances shaped like classic alien spaceships.
Function[]
Entrances open when the level begins, and Lemmings start to drop out of them one by one. Levels can have multiple Entrances (up to four), in which case Lemmings will come out of them in alternating order. The total number of Lemmings is always divided evenly among the Entrances. Typically, Lemmings will drop to the ground safely when coming out of the Entrance. However, on some levels, such as Steel Works, the Entrance is high enough above ground that Lemmings will die immediately upon landing.
In most games, the release rate determines at what speed Lemmings will come out of each Entrance. The release rate is found on the Ability Panel in some games, while in Lemmings Revolution and Lemmings Touch, it is set by interacting with the Entrances themselves. The release rate is split between all Entrances if multiple are present, which means an individual Entrance will release Lemmings more slowly even if it has the same release rate as the sole Entrance of another level.
In Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure, Entrances are tiles, and have collision with Lemmings like any other block. In some levels of the game where Lemmings and Exits are marked by separate colored shapes (which debuts in Planet 19, Sports), there are multiple Entrances, with each colored to match which type of Lemming they spawn; while in others (starting with Planet 20, Arts and Crafts), Entrances can spawn Lemmings marked with any of the shapes.
