Compression Method 1 is the sixth level of the Taxing difficulty in Lemmings.
Strategy[]
The solution of this level is very unlikely, though the title suggest you have to "compress"...
First, allow one Lemming to fall down to the rim of the pink brick outcrop, and then make him a Blocker as soon as possible. Use Basher skills from right to left to allow all Lemmings to walk to the left and get stuck inside the tiny space between the Blocker and the wall. When all of them are collected there, bomb the Blocker, and allow your Lemmings to march to the long corridor with the traps. Yep, I mean it.
Here's the deal: the Thumper Traps can kill ONE Lemming at a time when triggered, regardless of how many of them occupy the same space. So every time a trap hits your compressed crowd of Lemmings, only one of them will be killed. And since you only need to save 60%, these will be well within acceptable losses. The more skillfully you set up the Blocker at the start, the less Lemmings you shall lose. Eventually most of them will reach the exit.
100% solution[]
Though it was not intended by the developers, it is possible to save 100% of all Lemmings on the Super NES, Sega Genesis, and CD-ROM DOS versions. In the CD-ROM DOS version, the impact height is slightly increased.
The first Lemming that comes out of the leftmost entrance must dig down while the second Lemming from the same entrance bashes through the first pillar to stall for time. When the Digger is low enough to stop Lemmings from walking out the pit (It takes 7 pixels to do that), have it bash towards the left to catch all the other Lemmings. As it approaches the steel wall to the right, have another Lemming bash as it walks onto the small ledge created while the Basher is at work. Both Bashers will stop their work as they collide with the steel. There should still be a small kink in the steel just before the marble terrain that makes up the rightmost pillar. Have one more Lemming bash into that kink to both clear the pillar and shave off part of the steel. This will make the fall down below survivable, enabling all Lemmings to drop safely to the exit.
Version differences[]
- Atari Lynx
- Only has 40 Lemmings and 24 must be saved.
- There are only three entrances.
- 2006 Remake
- 4 minute time limit.
- Miner instead of a digger, making the 100% solution impossible.
- Trap locations are visible at the bottom.
