A Cloning Machine is an object appearing in several levels in Lemmings (PS3). When a Lemming moves past a Cloning Machine, it creates a new Lemming two seconds later. A single Cloning Machine can only be used once.

Using a Cloning Machine is required to solve some levels, as all of a level's Entrance portals might not have spawned enough Lemmings to meet the level's Lemming save requirement.

Cloning Machines, like Traps, Teleporters, and Pick-up Skills, do not appear in levels' preview images.

Appearance and animation[]

The Cloning Machine has an azure metallic body with a quadrilateral shape; the top edge is shorter than the base, and the top corners are rounded. It has a flashing green screen and a keypad with three rows of keys that alternate colors. A tank filled with green liquid is attached at its top; it contains a prototypical Lemming, which simply consists of a head with no hair and a short tail-like body. The prototypical Lemming swims around in a figure-8 pattern inside the tank.

The Cloning Machine's body stretches upward slightly when idle. When the Cloning Machine is activated, it bounces rapidly, its screen flashes more frequently, and sky blue lights shine through the Cloning Machine's sides, while the prototypical Lemming moves toward the tank's center and exits through its bottom and the green liquid depletes. After this, the tank is empty, the keys stop changing color, and the screen remains in its dimmed state.

Uses[]

If a Lemming with the Climber, Floater, and/or Bomber skill moves past a Cloning Machine, the clone Lemming also gains those skills, without depleting any skills from the player's inventory.

If a Builder passed by a Cloning Machine, it will stop building when the Cloning Machine is activated.

If a Lemming passes through a Cloning Machine right after Quit is selected from the pause menu, the clone Lemming does not use its creation animation, and instead simply appears beside the Cloning Machine. The clone Lemming's countdown until exploding begins at from the start, at 5.

Notes[]

  • In a trailer for Lemmings: The Puzzle Adventure, gameplay is shown where a Lemming is digging a treasure chest-shaped block that spawns a new Lemming when it disappears. This mechanic, while it has not been implemented in any official release, functions almost identically to the Cloning Machine.
